Abstract

The role of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) is significant, as they educate the majority of Latinos. Yet, institutions have not fully translated what it means to construct an HSI identity. Drawing on Garcia’s (2019) framework, The Typology of HSI Organizational Identities (THOI), this study examined 24 HSIs to determine an HSI identity by adapting the framework to determine HSI typologies. Researchers identified and collected data reflecting the enacted missions of each institution via (1) campus climate, social support networks, cultural enhancement, student development opportunities, institutional support; (2) faculty demographics; (3) graduation rates, and (4) student enrollment. This data was then compared to the espoused missions of each institution to determine THOI identities, illustrating the quadrants of Latino-Producing, Latino-Serving, Latino-Enrolling, and Latino-Enhancing.
