The Roles of E-Book Narration and Parent-Child Verbal Interactions During Bilingual Shared Reading

Abstract

The current study examines the impact of e-book English narration on bilingual parent-child verbal interactions and children’s learning outcomes during the shared reading of an English storybook app. In total, 121 Chinese children and their parents were included in our analysis using Structural Equation Modeling. Our results show that the e-book narration indirectly predicts children’s utterances in English, as well as their story comprehension and English vocabulary learning outcomes, via parents’ utterances in English. However, parents’ utterances in Chinese are not associated with children’s learning and even have a small but negative effect on children’s story retelling. The findings in this study have critical implications for the app designers, parents, and researchers in e-book design for children in EFL settings.
