This paper will discuss Freire’s global influences on environmental pedagogies and argue that ecopedagogical reinventions are essential for global, all-inclusive global/planetary citizenship and sustainable “development.” How politics of how “citizenship” and “development” is (not) taught to be critically read linguistically and dialogically will be problematized through Freire’s work, and reinventions of his ecopedagogical work. I will discuss how Friere’s work continues to be essential to critically read the politics of education emergent from the SDGs and other UNESCO initiatives such as global citizenship. Utilizing Moacir Gadotti’s reinventions of Freire’s work for planetary citizenship education, along with ecopedagogical work of teaching within and between local-to-national-to-global-to-planetary citizenships, I argue for citizenships education disrupts citizenship as a tool for global and world-Earth othering.
