Abstract

While internships can provide valuable hands-on experience, upward mobility, and access to professional networks, internships serve as a crucial recruiting avenue through which employers attract early career individuals. Unfortunately, all students do not get to participate in this type of experiential learning equitably, especially students from historically underserved communities, including HBCUs and PBIs. This paper derived from a larger mixed methods study exploring the challenges that employers face when recruiting for equity, including promoting a sense of belonging for Black and Brown interns. We found there are a multitude of challenges, ranging from abstract (e.g., recruiters’ understanding of equity) to concrete (e.g., geographic barriers) issues. Addressing these challenges will enhance students’ experiential learning opportunities as well as diversify the workforce.
