Using a Culturally Relevant Approach to Teach Grade 7 Students' Coding With Function (Poster 31)

Abstract

This mixed-method study focused on using a culturally relevant approach to teach students coding with functions. A group of Grade 7 African American students participated in ten weekly sessions. They were first introduced to a local quilting culture and learned the pattern design of the quilts. Then students learned to use the function to code repeated geometric patterns. Results of our study showed a significant improvement in students’ learning of coding with function. We did not find a statistical improvement in their knowledge of linear function, which was taught and used in the last two practices.
