This study reconstructs theoretical framework of conceptual coherence and develops the assessment of force conceptual coherence to investigate students’ ability of conceptual coherence. The sample in this research is 361 senior high school students in China, including 196 males and 165 females, all of whom had completed a course in mechanics. Some students do give inconsistent answer to the isomorphic question using different representations and contexts. Specific difficulties are noted when the questions are presented by the line chart and are positioned in the context of ‘hitting hockey’. Some evidence of possible gender-related difference is identified. Females in this research have higher error rate on both representational and contextual questions in comparison to males.
