Beyond Western Discourse: Shadow Education as a New Place of Educational Inequality in South Korea (Poster 7)

Abstract

Educational inequality is an important issue in various educational fields, including the sociology of education and educational policy, and many studies on this issue have centered on school education. However, recent studies have shown that educational inequality in East Asian countries such as Korea, China, and Japan—occurs not only through school but also through shadow education (SE). Through qualitative research, this study revealed educational inequality based on parental economic status in Korean SE. While most Korean parents spend on SE regardless of socioeconomic class, student experiences in SE vary significantly according to household income. Specifically, this study showed how educational inequality is created by SE, apart from Western-centered discourse.
