Virtual Reality–Enabled Patient Encounter Practice for Nursing Students: A Self-Efficacy Study (Poster 27)

Sun, April 16, 4:40 to 6:10pm CDT (4:40 to 6:10pm CDT), Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: East Tower - Exhibit Level, Riverside West Exhibition Hall

Abstract

This study presents a desktop virtual reality experience (dVRE) for nursing students to practice patient-encounter. To measure the significance of the dVRE, 42 students were recruited in the experiment group, and 16 students were in the control group. A paired sample t-test and a two-sample t-test were used to measure the significant differences of self-efficacy before dVRE and after dVRE, as well as the two study groups. Results indicated students’ self-efficacy after dVRE is significantly higher than their self-efficacy before dVRE, t (41) = -4.96, p <.001. Additionally, the self-efficacy for the experiment group is significantly higher than the control group, t (20.96) = 2.97, p <.05. This indicates the dVRE provides a promising outcome in improving nursing students’ self-efficacy.
