Learning Technology in a Community-Based Program: A Vehicle for Latinx Immigrant Parents' Empowerment

Abstract

This qualitative study examines parental empowerment resulting from Latinx immigrant parents’ engagement in Digital Home, community-based program. Reflecting elements of empowering community settings, the program built on and leveraged Latinx families’ cultural characteristics as they equipped parents with technical skills through teaching basic technology skills. The program’s structures fostered the development of trusting relationships, promoted information sharing, and emphasized communal learning. Among the positive outcomes parents experienced as a result of participating in the program were greater comfort in interactions with their children’s schools, the development of independence in using technology, and applying their learning to personal and professional situations.
