A Peer-Driven Technology Adoption Model: Using Communities of Practice to Influence Technology Adoption

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the role a peer-driven technology acceptance model (PDTAM) played, via a set of Communities of Practice (CoPs) developed to support the adoption and implementation of a new technology – Trellis. Using pre- and post-survey instruments, observations, and interviews, researchers determined that the CoPs assisted treatment participants in the diffusion and creation of knowledge, leading to participants’ improved levels of (1) Perceived Ease of Use (PEU), (2) Perceived Usefulness (PU), and (3) Perceived Value (PV) of the new technology. Researchers analyzed data between control and treatment groups, with results favoring treatment participants who more successfully learned the technology in a CoP. Peer-to-peer mentoring in the CoPs most helped users feel empowered in their use.
