New Language, New Identity: The Role of French in Group Belonging, Accent, and Identity Construction for British Columbia French Immersion Youths

Abstract

Using mixed methods approaches, 139 FSL and immersion students from 6 schools and 9 classes across British Columbia, Canada were surveyed on their potential group identities and experiences as French speakers in their programs and beyond. Some results suggest that immersion participants think of themselves as a distinct group, due in part to their knowledge of French, while at the same time, wish to be/may already consider themselves as BC Francophones. This suggests a greater affinity to the more local Francophone community, as well as a more inclusive understanding by participants of what it means to be a legitimate French speaker.
