"What's That Supposed to Mean?" Examining Intersectional Microaggressions Targeting Latinx Community College Transfer Student Identities

Abstract

This paper utilized the Critical Race theoretical framework of intersectionality to illuminate how Latinx transfer students at a research-intensive institution experienced intersectional microaggressions targeting their transfer student identity. Latinx students are overrepresented in the community college system, which makes them susceptible targets of intersectional microaggressions at receiving predominantly white institutions. Results from a case study of 12 Latinx transfer students indicated that participants experienced intersectional microaggressions due to the stigma associated with community colleges. There’s a paucity of educational research that examines intersectional microaggressions experienced by Latinx transfer students based on their community college identity. Intersectional microaggressions can lead to negative psychological impacts that can lead to low academic performance and attrition. The authors offer recommendations for policy and practice.
