A Thin Line Between Critical Race Theory (CRT) and Education: Teaching Approaches to CRT During State Bans

Fri, April 14, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

While many Critical Race Theory (CRT) bans have focused on K-12 public education, there has been an increasing public discourse to ban CRT in college classrooms. Yet teaching about systemic racism and preparing students with analytical skills to uncover overt and covert racism is essential in advancing racial justice. The purpose of this study was to understand how education faculty teach CRT as a theoretical concept amid banning CRT in public education. Through a critical qualitative as a methodological approach, three findings were identified. Participants (1) started with the historical background of CRT, (2) invited students to engage with their lived experiences around CRT, and (3) guided students in using CRT as an analytical tool in their professional experiences.
