Abstract

Teacher turnover is consistently shown to be detrimental to the quality of education programs, which in turn impacts students’ academic and developmental outcomes. Evidence suggests that teachers’ well-being and satisfaction with their jobs are substantially influenced by their relationships with and perceptions of cite administration. This qualitative study uses data from eighty-seven teachers three high schools in California. Results indicated the importance of teachers feeling supportive through administrators' acts of care, feelings of acceptance, and opportunities for choice. The results of this study highlight the importance of having school administration and faculty trained on how to provide effective emotional support to teachers so that the teachers can, in turn, provide increased support for their students.
