Innovating Schools to Promote Peaceful Culture: A Case Study of Hyukshin Schools in South Korea

Abstract

A new school model called Hyukshin school was introduced to criticize the oppressive and authoritarian school culture in South Korean education. Many teachers challenged the existing system to rebuild school culture to be more democratic and to encourage peaceful cultures. This being so, they used the term innovation which implies the reform of the school system and culture. The existing research studies on Hyukshin schools mainly focus on classroom innovation, learning practices, and school management. However, in my view, the practices and discourse on Hyukshin school need to be analyzed in a more holistic view because it aims to promote a peaceful culture that requires a transformation of the whole school system and culture using the frame of peace education.
