This paper utilizes Latinx girls’ experiences navigating gender & racial stereotypes, school discipline, and their perception of school climate to examine their sense of support and belonging in school. Through participant observation, epistolary responses, and nine semi-structured interviews with Latinx girls designated as “at-risk” by their school, this study explores how deficit-perspectives frame their experiences at school and how they learn to resist through a young women’s support group. Centering the voices of Latinx girls, our findings illuminate how school climate facilitates their sense of exclusion while also exploring the types of support they want and are principally receiving from youth groups outside of the classroom.
