A Voyage of the Pacific: Teacher Preparation in Ethno-Mathematics Beyond School Walls

Fri, May 5, 4:15 to 5:45pm CDT (4:15 to 5:45pm CDT), Division K Virtual Sessions, Division K - Section 05: Teacher and Teacher Educator Preparation Virtual Paper Room

Abstract

Program X prepares and empowers P-20 educators across disciplines to be locally-minded, global citizens who engage in rigorous, relevant, and contextualized mathematics that amplify the voices of their students. This is done via the innovative design, implementation, and assessment of culturally-sustaining ethnomathematics in informal and formal, place-based contexts. Research over the past 15 years led to policy and practice implications, including becoming institutionalized as the world’s first academic program in ethnomathematics. The mission, vision, and values of Program X are inspired by its role in the worldwide voyage of the traditional voyaging canoe Hōkūle‘a, bridging Indigenous wisdom and 21st century learning. In pursuit of truth, educational research is co-constructed through equity, empowerment, and dignity in our communities of the Pacific.
