Abstract

Despite institutional efforts to diversify STEM fields, Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and Pacific Islander students obtain STEM baccalaureates at lower rates than White and East Asian students (National Science Board, 2016). Given the outcome disparities, institutions created programs to promote the success of racially minoritized (RM) students in STEM (Lenaburg et al., 2012; Matton et al., 2012). However, a few studies explore the nuances of advising strategies and how they impact student outcomes. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine how a STEM support program uses proactive advising to promote the success of RM students in STEM. Findings revealed that sharing information and resources, encouraging students to succeed, making themselves available, and building authentic relationships positively impacted student success.
