The Pedagogy of Black and Latinx Teachers in Response to Moments of Racial Violence

Abstract

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and in the wake of the racial upheavals of the summer of 2020, this year-long qualitative study investigates how 14 Black and Latinx K-12 teachers with a self-identified critical sociopolitical disposition responded to moments of racial violence that garnered national attention during the 2020-2021 academic year. Using kitchen table platicas, this study explores the personal-professional reflections, the relational work with students, and the curricular and instructional approaches of Black and Latinx teachers in response to these moments of violence. Implications include how to better prepare and support K-12 teachers to address the unfortunate and inevitable reality of future moments of racial violence that garner national attention in the United States.
