In problem-based learning (PBL), students encounter numerous moments of conflicts, impasse, and struggles. Discussion on individual differences in coping with such failure experiences have been confined to individuals’ cognitive and metacognitive reactions to learning from failures. Given the lack of available scale that investigates a comprehensive aspect of student characteristics affecting students’ coping with failure in PBL (CF-PBL), this study developed and validated a scale for CF-PBL through exploratory factor analysis. The factor analysis results yielded a five-factor model for CF-PBL: Cognitive and social challenge-avoiding, positive and negative affective reactions to persistent failures, strategies for group regulation of failures and for resolving impasse. Theoretical and practical contributions of the development of CF-PBL scale are discussed.
