Inclusive Education, Support, and Intersectionality

• In Event: Interrogating Inclusive Education: A Look to the Future

Abstract

Inclusive education has become an international buzzword with numerous interpretations and not so successful implementations worldwide. In Iceland reigns a confusion about inclusive education and support. In relation to the implementation one can assume that the key concept is support. In this review focus will be paid to inclusive education in relation to the support system within schools in Iceland from the perspective of disability studies in education, belonging, and intersectionality. It is important to understand the system’s capacity to meet diverse needs and enhance students’ participation within inclusive settings. Preliminary findings suggest that the support system lacks dimensions to meet the needs of diverse students and that the current structure of support increases inequality among students who need support.
