Thu, April 13, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 6th Floor, Indiana

Abstract

This study explores the relation between spatial, material and organizational factors and bullying in the changing room. A social-ecological framework was used to investigate these relationships. The study is part of a larger ethnographic research project exploring the relations between school bullying and the institutional context of schooling. This particular study is based on participant observations and semi-structured interviews with students from pre-school class to eighth grade (i.e. approx. ages 5-14) at four comprehensive schools in Sweden. Data were analyzed with constructivist grounded theory. Findings reveal how spatial, material, and organizational factors such as having to get undressed, material construction of the space and scheduling affect the social relations among students and the bullying taking place in the changing room.
