The study examines the impact of National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) on the social-emotional competencies of 5th and 6th graders in Spokane, Washington during the 2018-19 school year. The study compares the social-emotional competencies of students taught by NBCTs and similar students taught by non-NBCTs using a quasi-experimental design with matching. The findings indicate that NBCTs are significantly more effective than non-NBCTs at fostering students' self-efficacy two months after the start of the school year (effect size 0.21). The results for self-management are similar (effect size 0.10) but not statistically significant. The findings are encouraging, and we hope that they will spur further research, as this is the first study to investigate the role of NBCTs in social-emotional student development.
