Abstract

A major goal of the English/Language Arts curriculum is for students to own their own learning strategies. Their personal concerns, levels of use of the strategies, and the positive and negative mindsets that “pop up” like mushrooms in the classroom and school culture affect students’ adoption and use of learning strategies. Formative assessment and feedback cycles are the closest thing in education to a “silver bullet” but formative cycles on personal concerns related to learning are uncommon. This classroom research study addresses the question, "How can the tools and approaches of the Concerns-Based Adoption Model be applied to implementing change related to learner-owned strategies in secondary ELA?"
