Recontextualizing Experiences and Knowledge: Exploring How Master's Students Perceive Connections and Contradictions Between Youth Cultures Using Interpretive Documentary Analysis

Abstract

In exploring what is “truth” and “who decides”, this study connects to an ongoing discussion about the affordances and limits of fieldtrips as relevant contexts for theoretical professional learning, in this case for the development of youth cultural expertise. Through an explorative approach to connect and make lines of meaning between what students see, examine, and communicate visiting a youth club based on creative activities, the analytic focus is directed towards investigating students’ mandatory assignments (n=40) on how they perceive connections and contradictions between formal teaching frames and informal expression forms of youth cultures. Preliminary findings show that students can flexibly connect informal and formal experience which may lead to transformative and consequential understanding for their future professional lives.
