This paper details the experiences of a research lab in the Global South using micro-writing publications to help novice researchers master the social conventions present in academic literacies. Informed by New Literacy Studies, discourse analysis, and culturally sustaining pedagogies, the authors argue that micro-writing within research teams helps researchers be better prepared to deal with the different issues in the publication process as a gradual learning experience. Through the analysis of micro-writings, academic pieces built from the initial writing, plus auto and duoethographic data reflecting on the writing exercises, this paper offers a nuanced view of how we can help novice scholars, especially those writing in their second languages, be more active participants of global research communities.
