A BlackCrit Analysis of How Black Collegians Experience Institutional Responses to Incidents of Antiblackness

Abstract

Historically and predominantly white institutions (HPWIs) are prompted to act in response to glaring racial incidents on a local and national scale. While extant research has analyzed the impact of discourse used in university statements, few studies have explored how such responses are experienced by Black collegians, especially Black undergraduates. Using BlackCrit as a theoretical framework, this study examined how Black undergraduates make meaning of institutional responses to two explicit incidents of anti-Black racism at a large public HPWI. Findings illustrate that institutional responses functioned to communicate anti-Blackness and in turn, exacerbated participants racial realites on campus.
