The Effects of Mobile Technology Usage on Learning Outcomes: A Systematic Review With Meta-Analysis

Abstract

This study conducted a meta-analysis of 85 studies (N = 9157) published between 2014 and 2022. The main purpose of the study was to analyze the impact of mobile technology usage on students’ learning. Furthermore, the study analyzed the influence of moderating variables such as community type, students’ socioeconomic status, hardware used, student-to-hardware ratio, teaching method, learning content/ topic equivalence, and degree of technology use in the control group. The results identified that using mobile technology has a medium effect on students’ learning, in terms of cognitive (g = 0.498), affective (g = 0.466), and behavioral (g = 0.339) learning outcomes. The findings contribute to better understanding of how to use mobile technologies for learning effectively, enjoyably, and engagingly.
