Motivational Differences Among Career Profiles Using Gottfredson's Career Choice Dimensions

Abstract

This study investigated the motivation patterns of 11 career profiles across six STEM and non-STEM study clusters. The latent career profiles were constructed according to sextype, prestige, and interest congruence based on Gottfredson’s dimensions of career choice. A sample of 9277 German university students from the National Education Panel Study (NEPS) rated their intrinsic and extrinsic motivations shortly after starting university. The 11 career profiles were compared in terms of their motivation, with intrinsic and career motivations being the most distinguished amongst profiles. Significant differences in intrinsic, career, and competitive motivation were present amongst the most prestigious profiles: P2, P8, and P11. What a student prioritizes when selecting an aspired career may be indicative of their motivational drives.
