Reasoning and Problem-Solving Within Multidisciplinary Groups: Understanding the Process and the Outcomes (Poster 36)

Abstract

The purpose of this review was to determine what forms of reasoning have been examined within multidisciplinary groups engaged in complex problem solving. We also wanted to understand how the characteristics of the multidisciplinary group, nature of the problem, and reasoning behaviors contributed to performance outcomes. A search strategy was developed and a total of 1,233 documents were initially identified. Following a review procedure, 111 documents formed the final pool. Documents were coded for essential information such as forms of reasoning studied; data sources; group composition, processes, and procedures; problem task; and major findings. Based on those data, trends were reported for key components, interactions among those components were identified; and implications for research and practice were forwarded.
