The Development of an Equity-Centered Curricular Crosswalk for K–12 Computer Science Education

Abstract

There is a call for teaching computer science (CS) across the traditional curriculum in more inclusive ways that consider the needs of all learners and increase student participation. Under a research-practice partnership project funded by the National Science Foundation, we addressed this need by developing an equity-centered curricular crosswalk that integrates three instructional frameworks: Problem-Based Learning (PBL), Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (CRP). The three frameworks separately rely on theoretical foundations that can be complex for teachers to translate to practice at elementary content levels. Our goal was to provide a graphical representation and set of teacher practices for these intersecting frameworks that can be used in the design and implementation of CS curricula.
