Civics and Citizenship in Early Childhood Social Studies

Abstract

In this systematic landscape review of literature on early childhood social studies (ECSS), we use a framework of critical childhood studies to explore trends in ECSS civics and citizenship scholarship. Findings suggest that while there is a growing thread of ECSS civics scholarship which treats young children as citizens-now, other scholarship treats children as future citizens.
