This paper highlights ways that Black youth may strengthen their connection to school-based STEM by drawing on knowledge gained through STEM-related traditions and rituals with family, friends, and community. Mathematics teachers and community educators reflect on the impact of having participated in hallmarks of Black culture such as playing card games that helped build a strong foundation for future STEM learning. Reflection on these formative experiences as youths also supported these educators in drawing connections to past generations of STEM learners who often developed number sense and scientific understanding through similar cultural traditions. This paper attempts to better understand the throughline of learning that connects past, present, and future imaginings of STEM learning.
