Examining the Effects of Individual Cognitive Differences and Learning With Games on Secondary Education Students' Understanding of If-Then-Else Statements

Fri, April 14, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: West Tower - Ballroom Level, Atlanta

Abstract

The research investigated whether there were any statistically significant differences in the performance of field-dependent (FD) and field-independent (FI) secondary education students when they learned about IF-THEN-ELSE using two different computer games and whether the order in which they used the computer games differentially affected their learning. The results showed that FD learners in Group A who learned about IF-THEN-ELSE using the VD computer game first, followed by the LD computer game, outperformed the FD learners in Group B who learned first with the LD and then with the VD computer game. Thus, the order of interacting with the two types of games significantly affected learners’ understanding of the IF-THEN-ELSE structure.
