Digital Treasure Trove: Incorporating Online Surveys for Data Collection

Abstract

The technical ability necessary to build web-based online questionnaires has decreased, hosting costs have become negligible, and ease of data collection has improved. As a result, there has been a proliferation of online data collection to elicit quantitative and qualitative information. This phenomenon has begun to impact the social sciences and educational research.

This conceptual paper focuses on the methodological issues inherent in using web-based online questionnaires for educational research and suggests best practices. These issues are highlighted within the context of conducting an educational research study of pre-service teacher education students that combined analog (e.g., paper-based) and digital (e.g., online) questionnaires.
