In Hong Kong’s multilingual environment, learning English as a Second Language (ESL) is of great priority, and the quality of English learning in the early childhood phase is particularly essential. This poster presented the preliminary results of a Kindergarten Early English Project (KEEP), which is designed to support local kindergartens teachers to improve their teaching ESL to young children in Hong Kong. Within a Systemic Functional framework, the qualitative analysis of data from multiple sources and methods indicated the current practices in Hong Kong kindergarten’s teaching ESL from the education environment, learning context, pedagogical practices, motivation and linguistic confidence. Implications for future interventions in the project and its further dissemination were also discussed.
