The Impact of Mask Use on Young Dual Language Learners

Abstract

The current study examined the impact of mask use on young dual language learners’ (DLLs) bilingual language development. The study also investigated DLLs’ attitudes toward and knowledge about mask use, and their actual mask use in and outside of school. Participants included 202 Spanish-English Latina/o children in Grades 1st, 3rd, and 5th. All DLLs completed bilingual language assessments and a survey, and their teachers also completed a checklist reporting DLLs’ mask use in school. Results from the study demonstrated that mask use did not yield negative impact on DLLs’ language development. However, compared to upper elementary graders, 1st graders need additional support for them to understand the importance of mask use and to adhere to wearing masks in school.
