From Indigenous Community-Driven Stewardship to Curriculum: The Story of the Arctic Sea Ice Curriculum Project

Abstract

This paper responds to current calls for educational action in light of ecological precarity. We do so by sharing a story about the emergence and co-creation of the Arctic Sea Ice Education Package which builds on Local Indigenous Knowledge and emerged from Indigenous Community-Driven Research and Stewardship in Inuit Nunangat (the home of Inuit). The math and science place-based high school curriculum engages youth with environmental, social justice and human rights issues. We argue in this paper that the story around the Arctic Sea Ice curriculum development process offers rich insights into the restorying and centering of Indigenous Knowledge Systems and future practices of environmental education that contribute to community well-being and new possible futures.
