Abstract

Music educators are searching for ways to reverse statistics that negatively reflect the progress of Black boys. Black music educators continue to provide optimum support to all students on their pathways to success. For many students, social and academic development is contingent upon positive and supportive interactions with educators. The influence of Black male band directors and their instructional approach teaching Black boys has not been systematically studied. Consequently, an aggressive approach to improving academic and social outcomes of Black boys leads to this presentation. Utilizing narrative inquiry, this presentation restories experiences of a Black male urban band director in a secondary school. Findings indicated this Black male band director utilized a culturally responsive teaching approach when teaching Black boys.
