Feminist Identity Development at a Historically Black University

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the feminist identity development of Black women undergraduates at a historically Black university (HBCU). We found that within the context of the women’s center at the HBCU, women and femme participants were limited in their feminist awareness. Instead, they were more invested in the challenges faced by other students on campus and utilized the women’s center for support. Given contemporary rollbacks of women’s rights and the geographical precarity of Black women at HBCUs in the wake of Dobbs, HBCUs should consider increasing feminist consciousness-raising to support student development and safety.
