Conceptualizing Inclusive STEM Transfer Culture: Preliminary Findings of a Case Study

Sat, April 15, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

While we know that culture and climate play an important role in STEM persistence, we lack understanding of how disciplinary and institutional cultures around STEM, minoritized groups, and transfer students can interact to promote an inclusive STEM transfer culture. This roundtable paper session will describe preliminary findings of a case study of two historically white institutions with different STEM transfer enrollment profiles and outcomes. Discussion will focus on whether more elite STEM-focused institutions enjoy higher completion rates for STEM transfer students due to higher selectivity (rather than real institutional commitment to the success of BIPOC and low-income STEM transfer students, and how transfer outcomes at the STEM department or program level can vary widely.
