In this report, we present a case study that illuminates our considerations for iteratively refining tasks over the course of a design-based research project. We bound our inquiry to our decision-making process for one task over seven different teaching experiments with middle schoolers in mathematics. We present four categories of considerations that emerged over the project: modifying a task to 1) provide instructional supports, 2) support our construction of evidence-driven models of students’ mathematics, 3) maintain instructional efficiency and a focus on research objectives, and 4) explore new instructional possibilities arising from students’ emergent activity. As a methodological report, we aim to offer guidance to qualitative researchers taking a design-based approach to studying student learning, particularly in mathematics.
