Citizenship From the Internal Margins: Translocal Indian Girls Map Multiliterate Pathways Through Critical Civic Education

Sat, April 15, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 7th Floor, Grand Ballroom Salon III

Abstract

This paper centers the civic literacies and learning of urban internal migrant girls in India. Despite their national citizenship, these youth face intersecting structural and cultural barriers to civic inclusion at the city level. Thus, their case illustrates how internal migration correlates with curtailed citizenship rights in the world’s largest democracy. This paper accordingly explores how 5 girls from an internal migrant community in a large northeastern city engaged with learning in a virtual afterschool educational program that aimed to support their sociopolitical belonging through critical literacy-based civic education. Discussing two ways youth drew on their identities, literacies, and experiences to engage with the program curriculum, the paper traces the importance of this topic for the education field.
