In this paper, the authors explore queer educational ethnography within and beyond school contexts. In particular, the authors attend to how queer ethnography changes as it moves across contexts. The disciplinary boundaries of K-12 education, higher education, adult learning, and community contexts have given rise to various interpretations and approaches for ethnographic work. In this paper, we review and discuss previous queer educational ethnographies. We also bring our own perspectives as scholars doing school-based queer ethnography. We then extend our thinking to other educational and community contexts to interrogate the tensions and possibilities in queer ethnographic work for queer and trans studies in education.
