How Does Equity Work Here? Preservice Teachers Explore Critical Literacy

Sun, April 16, 4:40 to 6:10pm CDT (4:40 to 6:10pm CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: B2 Level, Imperial Ballroom

Abstract

This case study examines the processes that deepen preservice teachers’ understanding of critical literacy and comfort level teaching interactive read alouds from a critical literacy stance. Using critical literacy as a theoretical frame, we look at how preservice teachers respond to activities designed by the researchers and group discussions that center social justice and encourage preservice teachers to explore their own biases and perspectives. Results from our study show that preservice teachers negotiate and redefine their understanding of critical literacy through focused, reflective discussion, and increase their comfort level through team planning and group feedback sessions.
