Multimodal Instruction: Multilingual Learners in Marine Biology

Thu, April 13, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 2, Superior A

Abstract

This presentation describes the work of a three-year National Science Foundation-funded project which centers secondary science teachers of multilingual learners. This work explores how a marine biology teacher leveraged multiple modalities for instruction, what we call multimodal instruction, in her classroom for multilingual learners. Data were collected over the course of one school year and included a semi-structured interview, audio and video recordings of lessons, and classroom artifacts. Findings demonstrate the teacher participant leveraged multimodal instruction but, opportunities might have been missed due to the lack of explicit connection between the teacher participant’s multimodal instruction and overarching instructional goals.
