"Who's School? Our School!" Narratives of a Student Walkout at an Urban Charter School

Abstract

This study documents the narratives of two former high school students that led a student walkout in September of 2018 from their urban charter high school. Their narratives illuminate the detrimental learning experiences they associated with losing their teachers, in particular their teachers of color. These included mentorship loss and new racialization experiences from new staff. In addition, students attributed their learning loss and feeling unprepared for college to the high attrition rate of teachers. Their narratives hold implications in regard to the long-term consequences of teacher attrition and to the value of retaining teachers of color for students learning experiences in urban charter schools.
