Moving Beyond the "Vicious Cycle of Horrible PD": Micro-Learning for K–12 Teacher Professional Development

Abstract

Since COVID-19, K-12 teachers have less time for professional development (PD) and need immediate application of learning. As teacher shortages increase and the qualifications of classroom teachers change, alternative methods to teacher PD will need to be considered. With it’s focus on short, chunked content in various formats, microlearning seems like it could be a good fit for K-12 teacher PD. This case study interviewed K-12 teachers on their current PD perceptions and needs to determine the fit of microlearning for teacher PD. Findings indicate that teachers want chunked content that is relevant to their work and asynchronous access for self-paced exploration. Microlearning could be a good fit for K-12 PD, best supporting teachers’ time constraints and personalized learning preferences.
