Abstract

This qualitative research studies secondary mathematics teachers’ participation in the creation and implementation of a mathematics learning collective focused on equitable practices. The collective included secondary mathematics teachers, university personnel, and the preservice teachers they hosted for the year. The effort was designed to be non-hierarchical, with the goals of supporting learning for all members around equitable mathematics teaching and learning. Preliminary results suggest engagement in the design of the collective supported the creation of clear norms and shared understandings of issues of effective teaching and definitions of equity and justice. Cooperating teachers were most interested in learning about how to support their preservice teachers in addressing issues specific to their school contexts.
