Abstract

Racial disproportionality in special education is an important equity issue that has troubled scholars and practitioners for over fifty years. Qualitative researchers can meaningfully and effectively interrogate this consequential issue; however, in order to conduct rigorous and compelling qualitative research, the field needs to understand how and under what conditions qualitative researchers have already examined racial disproportionality, what is learned from those studies, and where there are gaps in our knowledge base. This literature review illuminates the gaps in our understanding of qualitative research on racial disproportionality to date and contributes to a methodological research agenda for the field.
